Recently they helped build another bridge.

- The THW specialist groups for bridge construction erected a total of 16 temporary bridges in the Ahr valley after the devastating heavy rain event in Bernd in summer.

For nine of these bridges, forces from THW Freising were significantly involved.

20 Freising specialists have now returned proud and satisfied from the construction of their ninth bridge.

At the end of October, the specialists of the Freising specialist group for bridge construction, led by group leader Florian Wigger, erected a 27.45 meter long temporary bridge of the Krupp D type, together with volunteers from the bridge construction groups of the Fürth and Bremen-Süd local associations, near the federal highway 257 between the villages of Brück and Hönningen.

The construction, which was erected in just four days, can be used in two lanes for up to 30 tons each and opens up a district of Brück, which can currently only be reached via a bridge damaged by the flood.

"As soon as the temporary bridge is provided with access ramps by construction companies and the road connection that is also required has been created, the damaged Ahr bridge in Brück can be repaired," says the THW Freising report.

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.

On the first day of the mission, the required roller conveyor was set up on the prepared construction site.

Most of the actual bridge was assembled on the second day.

This work could be completed on the morning of the third day of operation.

The construction, which weighs around 80 tons, was then pulled over the Ahr to its final position with the help of a cable winch.

The bridge was lifted from the rollers with hydraulic presses and gradually lowered alternately onto the final supports - a job that, according to THW, "requires patience and the highest precision" in order to prevent the temporary bridge from slipping unintentionally.

After a thorough final inspection of more than 2,000 screw connections, the work was completed on time on schedule on the evening of the fourth day of operation.

With this mission, the THW has so far built a total of 16 temporary bridges in the Ahr Valley.

The bridge-building specialists from Freising were directly involved in nine of these structures with a total length of 348 meters and a weight of more than 620 tons.

This makes it clear "how much the expertise of the Freising Specialist Group on Bridge Construction, which has been built up over the past few years, is known and valued far beyond its own district," writes the THW.

After the flash flood disasters in 2016, including in Simbach, this second large-scale temporary bridge deployment "impressively demonstrated that temporary bridge construction at the THW is an absolutely indispensable skill for civil protection and disaster control in Germany".
