The Australian state of Health of New South Wales has announced that people who have not been vaccinated against the emerging coronavirus are 16 times more likely to die or enter intensive care units than those who received the vaccine.
Data released by the ministry, according to the British Reuters agency, showed that only 11 percent of the 412 who died due to the Delta outbreak over a period of four months were fully vaccinated, and the average age of those who died was 82 years, while only about 3 percent of those who were placed in intensive care units received two doses in the hospital. While more than 63 percent of the 61,800 cases that were recorded did not receive the vaccine.
“Young people who received two doses of the vaccine had lower infection rates and had almost no serious illness, while those who did not receive the vaccine in this age group were more likely to contract the virus and need to be hospitalized,” NSW Health Officer Kerry Chant said in a statement. .
These findings are consistent with data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which stated that unvaccinated individuals were 11 times more likely to die from the disease than those who were fully vaccinated.
Australia had been largely free of the virus this year until the outbreak of the fastest-growing delta strain began last June, which led to months-long closures in the cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.
