Piñera's Pandora's box is opened and the opposition seeks his dismissal 5:08
(CNN in Spanish) -
This Tuesday, after more than 20 hours of debate in the Chilean Chamber of Deputies, the constitutional accusation against President Sebastián Piñera was approved, with 78 votes in favor, 67 against and three abstentions.
The accusation now goes to the Senate of Chile for debate and vote.
The opposition groups in Chile agreed in early October to file a constitutional accusation against Piñera, after a sale and purchase agreement was revealed by Minera Dominga in the British Virgin Islands, where the president's family sold their part of the project to another Chilean businessman.
In Chile, a constitutional indictment is a mechanism of Congress that seeks to clarify political responsibilities in high public positions for any infraction of the constitution.
Following a political trial, the accused could be removed from office or disqualified from office.
Previously, Piñera had already denied any type of irregularity in the sale of the Dominga mining project.
In 2019, the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies had already tried to initiate a constitutional accusation against Piñera for "the grave and systematic violations of Human Rights committed by State agents" during the social outbreak, but the measure did not succeed as it did not gather the necessary votes .
