An election sham: This is how large parts of the international community, including the United States government, are describing Sunday's elections in Nicaragua, which saw incumbent President Daniel Ortega reach a fourth term. But it is difficult to think that Ortega's new mandate is not an illegitimate one. The once-revolutionary has spent the past few years cracking down on dissent. And, in June, he began a coordinated campaign to lock up opposition presidential candidates, journalists, human rights activists and anyone else perceived as a threat to the regime, ahead of Sunday's vote. Also as Matt Rivers shows us, his attempts at oppression are not only happening in Nicaragua: as the exiles say,the Ortega regime has attacked them abroad.
