Fickenscher: Compulsory testing for vaccinated people would be counterproductive

The Kiel virologist Helmut Fickenscher is critical of the proposal to introduce mandatory tests for vaccinated people. This is counterproductive, "because it tells the unvaccinated that there is no longer any argument to be vaccinated," said Fickenscher, who heads the Institute for Infection Medicine in Kiel at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, the "Flensburger Tageblatt" (Tuesday).

Kiel - You have to be clear about this signaling effect.

"It makes much more sense if we make it even more clear to unvaccinated people that they will achieve a protection rate of well over 90 percent with a vaccination."

With regard to vaccination breakthroughs, Fickenscher said that a distinction had to be made between vaccinated people who fell ill despite the vaccination and those who became infected but did not develop symptoms. "A quarter of infections despite vaccination remain symptom-free, and hospitalization or intensive therapy rarely occurs." Vaccinated people are therefore very good, but not completely protected, by the vaccination.

Fickenscher reacted rather cautiously to demands for compulsory testing for everyone - including those who had been vaccinated and those who had recovered.

"The golden way is still to increase the vaccination quota, we have to concentrate on that." Mass tests are the second choice.

“The benefits are clear, but the costs are immense.” From the virologist's point of view, it would make more sense to consider compulsory vaccinations, at least where there is close contact with vulnerable population groups.

"Since compulsory vaccination is politically difficult to enforce, tests are particularly suitable where particularly high incidences are observed."
