Greece: "Turkey Behaves Like a Pirate Country" | Israel today

Conflict developed between neighboring countries due to Turkish boats being documented as being escorted by an immigrant boat heading for Greece • The Greek Coast Guard attacked: "Dangerous maneuvers by the Turkish Coast Guard" • Greek Foreign Minister: "Turkey threatens Greece"

The military and diplomatic confrontations between Greece and Turkey have deep historical roots, but at present they focus on the issue of the many refugees crossing from Turkey to Greece - on their way to Europe.

In Athens, Ankara was attacked today (Tuesday) in a clearly undiplomatic language, against the background of documentation that allegedly shows two Turkish boats escorted by an Aegean boat sailing in the direction of Greece.

"The documentation undoubtedly illustrates the Turkish Coast Guard's efforts to carry out dangerous maneuvers, with the aim of leading the boat to Greece's exclusive economic waters," the Greek Coast Guard attacked.

The Greek Minister for Maritime Affairs, Yannis Flakiotakis, was much more assertive.

"Turkey is behaving, again, like a pirate country in the Aegean," he said, adding that "they are violating their obligations to the EU."

Greek Minister Falkiotakis referred to an agreement signed by the EU with Ankara in March 2016, in which it was agreed that the EU would transfer billions of dollars to Turkey - in exchange for stopping the flow of immigrants to EU countries, Bulgaria and Greece.

The same agreement benefited both sides, as the refugee crossing was relatively halted - but did not lead to a hermetic halt to the passage of refugees into EU territory.

As a whole, Turkey's position in the eastern Mediterranean is weakening these days.

Yesterday, the naval agreement between Greece and Italy came into force in which mutual recognition of the maritime borders of the two countries was established, with Turkey vehemently opposing the maritime borders of Greece.

"Turkey is committing violations in the eastern Mediterranean," Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dandyas accused.

"They are threatening Greece," he said.
