Memmingen - 861 cyclists made a committed contribution to the “City Cycling” campaign launched in Memmingen this year.

For this purpose, the winners of this campaign were honored in the Kreuzherrnsaal.

In 45 teams and a total of 861 cyclists, the people of Memmingen have saved a total of 26 tonnes of CO2 with 173,599 kilometers.

Unlike in 2020, this year the participants with the most kilometers driven were not honored, but the winners were drawn.

Since the award ceremony last year had to be canceled due to corona, Uwe and Sonja Stetter also received a gift basket as individual winners 2020 for the most kilometers. They cycled exactly the same number of kilometers, namely 2,800.7 kilometers. This year they were able to increase this incredibly long distance to an impressive 3,005.2 kilometers.

Christiane Müller, who cycled in the Steinheim Fire Brigade team, was honored with a gift basket as the individual winner. The #energieimfokus team (company e-con AG) with ten participants and a total of 1,987.2 kilometers was delighted about the group prize. For each team member, Memmingen's Lord Mayor Manfred Schilder presented the four representatives of the team, Michael Heckelsmiller, Patrick Faulhaber, Julia Rehklau and Bernhard Demmeler, with a red Memmingen towel.

2,095 municipalities took part in the campaign across Germany. Memmingen ranks 296th in Bavaria. Memmingen made it 56th out of 427 municipalities. Urs Keil, cycling officer of the city of Memmingen and coordinator for the participants, expressed his satisfaction: “The campaign was a complete success and we would like to thank everyone who cycled hard with us. This enabled us to significantly increase the performance from the two previous years. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement. But we are confident that we will be able to motivate even more people to take part in the next year. After all, Memmingen has enough potential for this, as there are numerous cyclists in our city who only had to register for the campaign. "The whole thing was organized by the city marketing department, whose head, Alexandra Hartge, was delighted with the lively encouragement.

The “City Cycling” competition was launched in 2008 by the Climate Alliance as a campaign for more cycling, climate protection and quality of life in the municipalities.

The Climate Alliance is a network of European municipalities in partnership with indigenous peoples that develops local responses to global climate change.
