Kosher under the supervision of prejudices Israel today

2021-11-09T00:37:36.147Z

The rabbinate's kashrut system suffers from problems of bureaucratic weight like any other body, but it is good, efficient, decent and professional from moment to moment.

MK Yulia Malinowski (Yisrael Beiteinu) did well, publishing her cheerleading video in Tiktok after the publication of the kosher reform of Minister of Religions Matan Kahana.

In the video, MK Malinowski congratulates on the reform, and jokingly throws a big X on the Badatz's kosher stamps and crowns the Badatz Malinowski's the highest kosher authority.

Minister Kahana was dissatisfied with the video for obvious reasons, and even made public his inconvenience.

In practice, MK Malinowski did a great service to the matter, because she put the whole business in the right context.

In terms of the kashrut system in Israel, the kashrut reform does not raise or lower almost anything.

After all, even according to the new outline, Ofira and Barco will not be able to grant kosher status to restaurants or factories.

Training rules should not be easier or friendlier.

In case this happens - kosher guards will vote with their feet, and will not buy the supervised goods.

On the contrary.

The main force will be handed over by the ultra-Orthodox Badatz, whose signatures have hitherto been on the side alongside the obligatory signatures of the local rabbinate, and will now enjoy complete independence in the field.

The rabbinate, by the way, is not out of the picture at all.

It remains in the system as a very powerful regulatory oversight body.

It is true that the new kashrut reform improves class and image with the kashrut system of Tzohar rabbis, but it does not really need this strengthening.

Everyone knows that kosher lunch is good kosher, and those who want to enjoy it already.

Those who do not - will exclude himself from a restaurant with kosher lunch even in a thousand reforms.

So the matter is really not very dramatic, neither for nor against.

Hence the question must be asked: What is MK Malinowski rejoicing about, that from the video she published it is clear that she does not fully understand the essence of the reform? Such are welcomed and joyful because they are an expression of hatred of the rabbinical establishment and the chief rabbinate.

Throughout recent weeks, the rabbinate has been portrayed as a messy, inefficient body that provides severe kosherness and charges a lot of money.

The reform is presented as repairing malfunctions in the system, etc., while all this is clearly not true.

The rabbinate's training system suffers from problems of bureaucratic gravity like any public service (I support the privatization of all services), but it is good, efficient, decent and professional from moment to moment.

It is cheaper for business owners than private supervision, and is much more convenient.

Ask any business owner in your area.

Most of them are satisfied and flow with this service no less than they flow with any other supervision of the authorities.

But almost every Israeli will be willing to believe any insult or accusation in the rabbinate.

Try telling a friend who is standing next to you now that any private kosher will be more expensive for the business owner, and you will see how he grins.

The disgust that many Israelis feel towards the Chief Rabbinate and kosher laws is not really related to the nature and quality of the service.

It is related to prejudice and opposition to the very existence of the rabbinate, and this - no reform will succeed in resolving.
