The Legislative Council election will be held next month. Apart from the epidemic, how Hong Kong people in the Mainland vote will become the focus.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said during a meeting with reporters today (9th) that he was studying the arrangements for the port ticketing stations, focusing on how to return to Hong Kong to vote before returning to the Mainland to be exempted from quarantine.

Set up a registration system to control the number of voters

Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor pointed out that he understands the situation of Hong Kong voters in the Mainland, and many Mainland Hong Kong people return every time they vote.

However, this election is due to the epidemic situation, and it seems that there is no possibility of customs clearance within a few weeks, allowing Hong Kong people to return to Hong Kong from different provinces and cities to vote at will.

She revealed that the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau is discussing with the central ministries and commissions, including through the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office and relevant port authorities to study specific methods.

Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor mentioned that due to legal restrictions in Hong Kong, voting must take place in Hong Kong. "Therefore, there is no practice of setting up voting stations in the Mainland." Therefore, the practice will be "passing customs and returning to Hong Kong's port voting stations to vote. They do not need to be quarantined for 14 or 21 days when they return to the Mainland, otherwise it will be difficult to persuade them to come back and vote."

Lam Cheng pointed out that he would strive to make the announcement as soon as possible, because he hopes to establish a registration system to know how many people come back to vote, and then make appropriate arrangements to decide how many ports to use.

She pointed out that at present, Hong Kong residents from the Mainland return to Hong Kong through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao and Shenzhen Bay ports, but if there are too many people, these two ports will not be able to do it.
