An investigation into the assassination attempt on Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Khazimi continues, and a number of sources told the pro-Saudi Al-Arabiya network today (Tuesday) that three figures from the country's pro-Iranian militias behind the operation have been identified.
An Iraqi source from the security forces said: "Iraqi authorities and intelligence have so far identified three people behind al-Khazimi's assassination attempt."
An Iraqi source told the Russian RT network that a meeting held between refugee elements in the wake of the assassination attempt did not yield any results, and that another meeting is expected.
"The rally was held at the home of former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in the presence of the heads of the republic, ministers and members of the Supreme Judicial Council, in addition to Shiite political leaders and militia leaders," the source said.
According to him, at the conference the parties discussed the attempted assassination and its consequences, but did not reach a conclusion.
Among other things, the need to complete the investigation and prosecute those involved in the operation was emphasized.
According to Arab media reports, senior Iraqi security officials and sources close to the Iraqi armed factions have revealed that the attack was carried out by an organization receiving support from Iran.
Sources also told Reuters that the drones and explosives in the assassination attempt were made in Iran. It was also reported that the assassination attempt was carried out by at least one unit of the pro-Iranian militias, but there are different assessments regarding the specific militia.
