The Central District Attorney's Office announced today (Tuesday) that it will not appeal against the early release of Sigalit Haimovich, who was convicted in 2002 of the murder of Assaf Steirman in 1996.

Haimovich is expected to be released from Neve Tirza prison tomorrow during daylight hours.

Haimovich was due to be released in January 2025. The Central District Attorney's Office objected to the request for release.

Her two previous requests, in 2018 and 2019, were denied.

Upon learning of the release committee's decision to shorten Haimovich's sentence, Adv. Zion Amir, who represents her along with Adv. Inbar Rosenbaum, said: "This is a legal battle that has lasted for the past three years and included appeals to the district court and the Supreme Court. "His life is a young boy for no wrong in his palm and at the same time he is a prisoner who has served a prison sentence of more than 20 years and underwent an extraordinary rehabilitation procedure that justifies her release from prison."

"His death is an integral part of my life and will continue to be," Haimovich told the Parole Board.

"I'm Assaf's killer. I'm ashamed to be Assaf's killer and I hurt to be Assaf's killer. I do not expect anyone to ever forgive me. It will never be okay, as long as I am alive and Assaf is dead."

Assaf Steirman, 18, was murdered in December 1996 in the Ussishkin grove, between Kfar Saba and Hod Hasharon.

The murder remained unsolved for four years, until in December 2000, Rei Horev's wife complained to the police that he had attacked her and said that after their marriage he confessed to her about the murder he had committed.

Horev was arrested and confessed to the act.

"It was a murder for the sake of murder," the sentence read.

"A cruel and despicable act of wickedness in his name, without motive, without a glimmer of reason. Without a feeling of compassion, and without hesitation of remorse."

Rei Horev murdered Steirman in the presence of Sigalit Haimovich, who assisted him in the act, and Lehi Gluzman.

Haimovich, 17, was sentenced to 24 years in prison at the time of the incident.
