New Zealand has stepped up security in parliament today (Tuesday), following protests by thousands of protesters against the obligation to vaccinate against the corona virus and closures aimed at curbing the epidemic. All but two of the entrances to the Houses of Parliament, known as the Hive, were closed under unprecedented security measures as protesters, mostly without masks, marched through the center of the Wellington capital and gathered outside Parliament.

Although the demonstration was peaceful, many demonstrators held up signs and posters that read, among other things, "Freedom" and "Kiwis are not lab mice." They demanded that the government abolish the duty of vaccines and restrictions, and among the protesters were those who waved signs in support of former US President Donald Trump and accused the media of lying.

"They will not threaten me or force me to put something I do not want into my body," said one of the protesters outside parliament. "I ask (the government) to give us back 2018. Just like that. I want my freedoms back."

New Zealand is struggling to ward off the outbreak of the contagious delta variant, and Prime Minister Jessinda Arden has been forced to move from its zero-contagion strategy through targeted and short-term routines alongside the virus with the expansion of vaccine rates.

Ardren said last month that the state would require teachers and health and welfare workers to be fully vaccinated against the virus, and the decision drew criticism among opponents of the vaccine requirement.

"Treat us like human beings!" Another protester exclaimed when asked about the government's position.

"I am here for freedom. The government, what it does, is against freedom."

Speaking to reporters in parliament, Arden said: "What we have seen today does not represent the vast majority of New Zealanders."

However, the prime minister is facing increasing political pressure and with demonstrations demanding easing restrictions ahead of the Christmas holidays.
