Sigalit Haimovich, who was convicted of the murder of the boy Assaf Steirman in 1996, was released this morning (Wednesday) from Neve Tirza prison after 19 years in prison.

Haimovich was convicted in 2002, and was due to be released in January 2025.

The Central District Attorney's Office announced yesterday that it would not oppose the release request, unlike its two previous requests that were denied in 2018 and 2019.

"His death is an integral part of my life and will continue to be," Haimovich told the Parole Board.

"I'm Assaf's killer. I'm ashamed to be Assaf's killer and I hurt to be Assaf's killer. I do not expect anyone to ever forgive me. It will never be okay, as long as I am alive and Assaf is dead."

Assaf Steirman, 18, was murdered in December 1996 in the Ussishkin grove, between Kfar Saba and Hod Hasharon.

The murder remained unsolved for four years, until in December 2000, Rei Horev's wife complained to the police that he had attacked her and said that after their marriage he confessed to her about the murder he had committed.

Horev was arrested and confessed to the act.

"It was a murder for the sake of murder," the sentence read.

"A cruel and despicable act of wickedness in his name, without motive, without a glimmer of reason. Without a feeling of compassion, and without hesitation of remorse."

Horev murdered Steirman in the presence of Sigalit Haimovich, who assisted him in the act, and Lehi Gluzman.

Haimovich, 17, was sentenced to 24 years in prison at the time of the incident.
