With the aim of improving agricultural production and achieving self-sufficiency, the Daraa Agriculture Directorate, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), launched a project to produce vegetable seedlings in low tunnels.
According to the head of the Planning and International Cooperation Department in the Directorate of Agriculture in Daraa, Eng. Hassan Al-Ahmad, the project in Daraa includes 250 beneficiaries in the first phase in 17 villages within the cities of Al-Sanamayn, Izraa and Tafas, while the number of beneficiaries in the second phase reaches about 1,600 beneficiaries through transferring the farmers’ experiences to each other, with the distribution of 50 percent of the Actual production on new farmers.
Al-Ahmad said in a statement to SANA Economic Bulletin that the Directorate of Agriculture provides technical support and the process of training farmers on how to plant and produce through field schools according to scientific conditions, while the FAO provides equipment and supplies for seedling production from water pumps, irrigation networks, tanks, plastic, brackets, iron, covers and special cork pots. by farming.
Al-Ahmad explained that the beneficiaries are selected through spatial committees in the targeted villages of small farmers who own a home garden for planting seedlings and a water source for irrigation, in addition to the desire for agricultural work with priority for families headed by women, pointing out that the Directorate conducts weekly sessions for farmers in order to train them on the production process from start to finish.
