The Speaker of the Knesset, MK Miki Levy, addressed the Knesset members today (Wednesday) and asked them to refrain from bringing food and drink into the Knesset plenum.

This is after Knesset members, led by MK David Bitan of the Likud, handed out candies and chocolates recently to keep the MKs awake.

In the budget discussions, the coalition's chairman, MK Idit Silman, also distributed various snacks to MKs

.

"This is an act that harms the public image of the Knesset, the visibility of the plenary debates and may also pollute and damage the expensive and special equipment and furniture that is in it."

According to the Speaker of the Knesset, "During the votes on the state budget, I was able to bring drinks and food into the Knesset plenum hall because of the long hours and the need that arose.

"The long and unusual voting nights that required us to stay in the plenum for a long time will not be allowed, and from now on it will not be allowed to bring drinks and food of any kind into the plenary hall, as was always the custom."
