Farmers in the town of Beit Sawa in Damascus Countryside are eagerly awaiting the bean harvest season to start work, as it is the main season to secure their material income, as this cultivation constitutes about 70 percent of the total agricultural areas in the town, which amount to 400 dunams.

The fertility of the land and the availability of clean water are two factors suitable for the cultivation of broad beans, which is what distinguishes the town of Beit Sawa, according to farmer Adnan Abd Rabbo, who explained in his statement to the SANA delegate that between 5 and 7 tons of beans are marketed daily from the town to Al-Hal market in Damascus and from there to All provinces.

Farmer Abd Rabbo, while picking his crop, said, “Broad beans are one of the most important summer seasons, and their prices are acceptable to some extent, despite the high production costs,” noting that he grows more than 20 dunums of this material along with various other crops.

Most of the family members participate in the bean harvest season in the town, according to farmer Hassan Jumaa, indicating that the broad bean cultivation season begins in May, so production appears after three months, and harvesting continues until December.

The farmer, Jumaa, stated that the grains are plucked and packed in bags, which are marketed green or dry.

For his part, Mahmoud Abd Rabbo, a member of the Agricultural Association in Beit Sawa, explained that the cultivation of broad beans is one of the most important crops on which the townspeople depend for their livelihood, because the environment and soil of the town and the experience of its farmers with this crop are suitable for that.. Moreover, this cultivation did not succeed in other areas, as he put it.

Abd Rabbo indicated that the farmers are investing in the empty spaces between the bean plants by planting other crops such as onions, spinach, chard and coriander, pointing out that the association was able to provide small quantities of diesel, but it is not sufficient to cover the needs of the town, expressing his hope to support agriculture more and secure its requirements, especially of fuel. Fertilizers and agricultural medicines.
