The Munich car manufacturer BMW is experiencing noticeable restrictions due to the global chip shortage.

Various models must be delivered without a touchscreen.

Munich - The global auto industry has been in a chip crisis since the end of last year.

A significant shortage of the semiconductors, which are so important for car production, is causing restrictions and delays in production for the large car manufacturers.

For example, the German car manufacturer Opel decided to stop production at the Eisenach plant by the end of the year.

But restrictions are now also facing the customers of the Munich DAX group BMW.

BMW announces "temporary elimination of the touch function" - reaction to the chip crisis

As a spokesman for the company

confirmed

, BMW will not be able to install touchscreens to operate the infotainment or navigation system in numerous model series that are to be delivered in the coming weeks. Models of the 3-series, 4-series, the convertible Z4, as well as the SUV-series X5, X6 and X7 are affected by the restrictions. The affected vehicles will initially be delivered to the BMW plant in Spartanburg in South Carolina.

The company's spokesman stated that the restricted functionality will also appear "in some models on the German market" and spoke of a "temporary elimination of the touch function" in this regard.

Affected customers should, however, receive a credit note for the touchscreen that has not been installed, as well as the opportunity to have the function retrofitted in the near future.

BMW suffers from a lack of chips - the assistance system is also no longer installed for the time being

In the affected models, the infotainment system can still be controlled normally via the iDrive controller in the center console, which had been established in BMW cars for years.

The connection between the smartphone and the car via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is also not affected by the lack of a touchscreen.

In addition to the touchscreen, vehicles with the Parking Assistant Plus package would have to do without the reversing assistant due to the shortage of chips.

This enables the driver to automatically reconstruct the last 50 meters of the route taken.

This enables the car to automatically reverse out of narrow dead-ends, among other things.

Chip shortage in the auto industry: the end of the restrictions is not in sight

According to the Munich carmaker, the two fully electric models iX and i4 are not affected by the restrictions caused by the lack of chips.

These will continue to be delivered with a touchscreen and the corresponding assistance systems.

How long the delivery of cars without touchscreens by BMW will last cannot be foreseen at this point in time.

BMW CFO Nicolas Peter announced last week, however, that the group expects "that semiconductor supply will keep us busy beyond 2021."
