He had a lot of regular customers.

People loved Marco Scocci's ice cream creations.

But now the 54-year-old has locked his restaurant in Oberammergau.

Oberammergau - This comparison, which Marco Scocci makes when asked about the closure of his ice cream parlor, is hardly surprising. Like an athlete, he has to quit at the height of his career, replies the die-hard AC Florence fan with a smile. The 54-year-old sits at a table in his Scocci ice cream parlor, where moving flair has replaced a sociable atmosphere. The native Florentine is in the process of clearing out the interior. After 23 years, he has drawn a line and closed the doors of his restaurant forever.

Glass ice cream cups are lined up on one wall, waiting in vain for balls.

No gelato far and wide.

Even the smell of coffee no longer wafts through the café.

The oversized plastic of an ice cream cone with lavish scoops and whipped cream, which made it clear at the entrance what to expect inside, stands lost in the room.

Marco Scocci sits a few meters away.

He'll need a few more weeks to clear everything out - for his successor.

In the future, too, there should be ice cream at Dorfstrasse 17, but no more creations from his hands.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen: No more after 23 years - ice cream parlor owners conjured up creative flavors

He and his wife had been thinking of quitting since the beginning of the year - for health reasons.

At the end of October they put this idea into practice.

After 23 years.

In 1998, Scocci opened the ice cream parlor with his brother, and since 2010 he has been running the business with his wife.

In the first twelve years one drove a traditional rail.

When his brother withdrew, Marco Scocci became more adventurous, making ice cream from fresh peppermint leaves, avocado, goat's milk or tomatoes and basil.

Now, however, after many years of countless seven-day weeks, it was time for him to say ciao.

But now he is not sitting sadly in his bar, where voices can only be heard from a radio, from an Italian broadcaster.

“I'm happy,” he says.

His regular guests are sad, but reacted understandingly.

“They congratulated me on my courage,” says Scocci.

In the course of time, many of them no longer came to the “Scocci” ice cream parlor, but “to Marco”, says the 54-year-old with a smile.

But he was also looking forward to rare or unknown guests, so much so that he liked to try to answer in the language of the respective customer or to learn it a little - even if it was Chinese.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen: No more ice cream parlor in Oberammergau - the owner had learned the trade from his uncle

The vocabulary learning is now over. Scocci felt ready to close. Also because his son and daughter go their own way in the medical field. “Fortunately,” says Scocci, his children would not have sought a successor. “Because they know how little time you have,” he adds. Ice cream production started at four in the morning. At 8 p.m. the boss locked the shop, after which it was cleaned until around 9 p.m. There was also a winter break, but effectively it was only a two-week break a year.

The native Florentine, who learned the trade as a young man in his uncle's ice cream parlor in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, did not even want to wait for Passion 2022.

He sees this failure calmly.

He took part in two vow games.

A lot of guests are to be expected, but what is associated with "significantly more stress" is concentrated.

Again and again a satisfied smile appears on Scocci's lips.

How does it go on now?

Applications are in progress.

The 54-year-old is "open to anything".

Perhaps he will stay in contact with customers.

After all, dealing well with guests is just as much a part of his specialties as his ice cream for a long time.
