The draft final statement of the COP26 climate change summit held in Glasgow, Scotland, called on countries to accelerate the achievement of emissions reduction targets by the end of 2022, three years earlier than the date set at the previous Paris summit.
According to Agence France-Presse, after ten days of discussions between delegates of two hundred countries on ways to implement the goals of the Paris Agreement on limiting temperature rise, the draft statement called on countries to reconsider and strengthen their plans for decarbonization by the end of next year.
The draft clarified that limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius requires targeted and effective actions from all parties in this critical decade, stressing that there is a need for rapid and sustainable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the repercussions of global warming seen in many countries through floods, droughts and storms.
The COP26 Climate Change Summit began its work last Sunday in Glasgow, Scotland, in an attempt to unite efforts to save the planet from the catastrophic effects of climate change.
