Corona numbers are increasing in Bavaria - new lockdown makes sense?

Infectiologist takes a position

The Munich infectiologist Christoph Spinner does not currently consider a new lockdown * to be helpful, despite the massively increasing corona numbers.

"With regard to pandemic control, lockdowns are not only the most radical means politically, but also rather weak scientifically - unless they are implemented and consistently controlled." German press agency.

"Unlike in spring, there is an effective prevention option available: vaccination."

Corona in Bavaria: 2G rule important - high vaccination rate necessary

The 2G rule could also make a significant contribution to pandemic control.

In the case of infections of vaccinated or convalescent people, the likelihood of severe courses and hospital admissions is significantly reduced.

In Austria it is also shown that the 2G rule could still induce one or the other undecided to vaccinate.

Sufficiently high vaccination rates are the only way back to normal.

In countries with high vaccination rates such as Spain or Israel there are significantly lower numbers of infections and hospitalizations.

Corona numbers are increasing - "act as quickly as possible"

"In my opinion, broad booster vaccinations * for people who were vaccinated more than six months ago are crucial for the winter," Spinner continued. Studies have shown that this could prevent up to 95 percent of symptomatic infections. "Due to the nationwide increase in the number of infections, we have to act as quickly as possible here."

On the question of whether the third vaccination makes sense for under 70-year-olds, Spinner said, there was increasing evidence that the vaccinations would offer additional effective protection for all adults, regardless of age.

Above all, older people are better protected from hospital admissions and severe courses.

"Even in schools, everything imaginable should be done to increase the vaccination rate wherever possible," said Spinner.

Until then, the consistent application of the AHA + L rules (distance, hygiene, everyday mask and ventilation) could reduce the corona risk.

"Without vaccinations or consistent AHA + L rules, a further increase in the number of infections in schools must be expected."
