Allgäu - Where do the hikers in the Allgäu come from, how old are they and how much money do they spend?

A study by Allgäu GmbH found some surprising answers.

The nearly 900-kilometer long-distance network of hiking trails Allgäu has been in existence since 2014.

By means of a guest survey, the hiking trilogy as well as the hiking offer in the Allgäu have now been put to the test for the first time.

From 2019 to 2021, over 2,400 hikers in the Allgäu were surveyed on the routes of the hiking trilogy about their hiking behavior and socio-demographic characteristics.

They should also rate the quality of the hike and stages.

The result: The Allgäu hiker is on average 52.4 years.

The holiday hikers come mainly from North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden Württemberg.

You prefer to be out and about in pairs.

How much do hikers spend?

Holiday hikers spend an average of 79.50 euros per day, day hikers 19.10 euros, of which 63 percent were spent on refreshments.

68 percent of Allgäu guests hike several times a week, more than the national average of 62 percent.

And so hiking is also the main reason for those surveyed to travel to the Allgäu.

The guest survey, which was carried out by Project M © from Hamburg and commissioned by Allgäu GmbH in 2019 as part of the Leader project “Quality assurance for hiking and cycling in the Allgäu”, has now been presented to the 34 partner locations of the hiking trilogy and the project partners.

School grades 1.4 and 1.6

"We can be very satisfied with the result," says Bernhard Joachim, Managing Director of Allgäu GmbH.

“Experiencing nature, doing something for your health and being active are the main motives of the Allgäu hikers.

Both the route guidance, the nature of the route, the orientation through signage and signposting received school grades between 1.4 and 1.6.

For two thirds of holiday hikers, hiking is the main reason for their trip to the Allgäu. ”In addition, 58 percent of those surveyed said they would gladly recommend the Allgäu hiking trilogy to friends and acquaintances.

“The Allgäu hiking trilogy” has a very high proportion of enthusiastic guests compared to other destinations, ”adds Heinz-Dieter Quack from Project M ©.

Hosts play an important role

The institute was surprised by the results on information behavior: the accommodations were named as the second most important source of inspiration and information.

In this way, the hosts make a decisive contribution to the satisfaction of the guests.

The entire study will be available by the end of the year.

The results flow into both quality assurance and the further development of the Allgäu hiking trilogy.
