A man is sentenced to 28 years for letting his daughter die in a burning car during a police chase

SPARTANBURG, SC - A South Carolina man who let his 19-month-old daughter die in a burning car during a police chase has been sentenced to 28 years in prison after pleading guilty.

Imhotep O. Norman, of Spartanburg, was sentenced Tuesday, according to the 7th Circuit Attorney's office, Barry Barnette.

News outlets reported that officers tried to stop him for speeding in April 2019 as flames and smoke billowed from his car.


They sentenced to 41 months in jail to a robber of the Capitol.

The harshest sentence for the fact so far

Norman drove over the median of Highway 14 and onto Interstate 85, where cops forced him into the right lane.

He then jumped out of the burning vehicle and as he fled, a police officer saw him throw a backpack containing illegal drugs, the prosecutor's office explained.

Firefighters found her daughter's body after extinguishing the fire.

Xena Norman died from burns and acute carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the office.

The girl's father, who was arrested hours after fleeing into the forest, told investigators that he thought the agents who were chasing her would rescue her.

Norman, 28, pleaded guilty to manslaughter for child abuse, failure to stop before authorities, and several drug-related charges.

He will have to serve 85% of his sentence before he can be released, according to the prosecutor's office.
