The Directorate of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform in Daraa launched a project to manufacture organic compost within five field schools.
The project, which is implemented in cooperation with the United Nations Agriculture and Food Organization (FAO), aims to benefit from the waste of animal and plant farms in the manufacture of organic fertilizers that are comparable to chemical fertilizers in the long term in terms of effectiveness and prevent the negative effects of chemical fertilizers on plants and humans.
Head of the Planning and International Cooperation Department in the Directorate of Agriculture, Eng. Hassan Al-Ahmad, said in a statement to SANA reporter that the compost production project is considered a complement to the production of vegetable seedlings within the low tunnels, pointing out that the farmer can, through simple equipment and training, meet his needs of organic fertilizer at simple costs by making use of farm waste. Plant and animal.
He added that the directorate and the FAO supported some farmers with machines for chopping branches that were placed in five field schools in the towns and cities of Namer, Sheikh Miskeen, Yadoudeh, Glen and Faqih. The farmers were also handed a metal net, some simple agricultural equipment and a water pump for hydration needs.
Al-Ahmad explained that the correct production of fertilizer compensates for the chemical fertilizer and performs its functions and is considered a safe and clean alternative, and the surplus can be used for commercial purposes, thus improving the farmer's income.
Farmer Ahmed Al-Nabulsi, one of the beneficiaries of the compost project in the Namer town field school, confirmed that making compost in the current way saves the farmer additional costs and positively affects the prices of vegetables in the future. To reach the production of seedlings and the future of self-sufficiency and the replacement of chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizers.
