Asked for a referral for a flu vaccine - and found out she had cancer Israel today

Tamara's life was saved thanks to the vigilance of Dr. Adva Mendelson from Maccabi Health Services • "The doctor recognized that there was a slight decrease in hemoglobin levels in the blood - and it lit a red light for her"

About a year ago, Tamara Zafrani-Caesar sent a request to her family doctor at Maccabi Health Services.

She contacted Dr. Adva Mendelssohn through the app, and asked for a referral for the flu vaccine. Dr. Mendelssohn gave her a referral, and asked for the same opportunity that she would go for a blood test.

"The doctor recognized that there was a slight but trending drop in hemoglobin levels in the blood between various tests I did, and it lit a red light for her. This light saved my life," Tamara (50, Raanana) told Israel Today.

She went for blood tests, which revealed a further drop in hemoglobin levels.

"A trending decrease in hemoglobin levels in the blood may indicate internal bleeding, which is one of the early signs of developing colon cancer in the body," Dr. Mendelssohn explained.

Calmly and calmly, Tamara came for an examination at the gastroenterologist.

"I was sure everything would be fine. The only thing I was afraid of was the colonoscopy, which is a bit unpleasant," Tamara described the moments before her world was shaken.

"I went to the doctor, and after a few tests it turned out that I had advanced colon cancer, but still treatable. I was shocked by the diagnosis. I felt no pain or physical sign that could indicate the development of a disease in my body. I was sure they would not find anything.

"We caught the cancer just before the situation became irreversible. I was in the market, and at the same time I felt lucky that we managed to catch it in time. My husband always tells me: 'This test saved your life.'"

Tamara immediately began receiving treatment.

She underwent surgery to remove the tumor, followed by a series of chemotherapy treatments.

She is currently recovering and undergoing a rehabilitation process.

"Unfortunately, this is the fourth time I have had cancer, but this time it was the most severe and frightening," she said.

"Discovering the disease at a relatively advanced stage and still recovering from it - it's only thanks to the vigilance of the doctor, who caught it in time."

Israel is currently marking the week of raising awareness of the importance of conducting screening tests and consulting with the family doctor during a routine.

Dr. Adva Mendelssohn explains: "Tamara showed personal responsibility when she asked to be vaccinated against the flu.

Thanks to her referral I also noticed the last blood tests she did, and from there we got to the discovery of the lifesaver.

It is important to be in touch with the family doctor.

He knows the patient best, and knows how to pay attention to small and big things.

This is not the first time this test has proven to be life-saving.

Go get tested. "
