The vaccination turbo is to be re-ignited in Freising shortly.

Up to 500 vaccinations a day - that is the ambitious goal from November 22nd.

Freising

- After months of slack, the vaccination campaign in the district is picking up speed again.

The driver, however, are the booster vaccinations.

First vaccinations are carried out at the Freising vaccination center only about a dozen per day.

The vaccination center could not be ramped up immediately, as politicians wanted: neither the available staff nor the vaccine ordered weeks ago would be sufficient, emphasize the vaccination center managers.

However, the vaccination turbo is to be re-ignited shortly.

Only ten percent are first vaccinations

After there was hardly any interest in vaccination for months and everything was scaled back, there is now a strong demand for third-party vaccinations: The "boosters" make up 70 percent of the approximately 170 vaccinations that are currently administered at the vaccination center, as reported by director Torsten Koch. "In addition, there are ten percent first vaccinations and 20 percent second vaccinations". The latter clientele are also students who received their first dose a few weeks ago. A mobile vaccination team continues to travel to schools and old people's homes (booster), and two other teams are again stationary at the vaccination center.

There are currently more people wanting to be vaccinated if their second vaccination was more than six months ago.

The short-term appointment offer is still manageable due to the limited vaccine.

It had to be ordered two weeks ago when there was no booster hype, as Koch explains.

If more vaccine is available shortly, however, it will be possible to assign significantly more appointments.

With the arrival of the next order (November 23), up to 500 vaccinations should take place every day.

You can already book your vaccination until December 31st.

“And there are still a lot of free appointments,” adds Hubert Böck, deputy head of the vaccination center.

Biontech bottleneck due to Moderna?

The vaccination center is currently having some problems with the recommendation by the Stiko (Standing Vaccination Commission) that the Moderna vaccine should only be used in people over the age of 30. That means: All under 30-year-olds who have booked a Moderna appointment at the vaccination center (Tuesday and Thursday) should now actually receive Biontech. The good news: "It looks like we can provide Biontech to all those affected who have already made a Moderna appointment," said Böck. According to the current state of affairs, sufficient vaccine has been ordered for it. All others over 30 scheduled for a Biontech vaccination (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) would also receive their vaccine as planned.

In the next few weeks, the main hope is to be able to close the gaps in the staffing levels.

They have just given up job applications.

They are looking for employees for both administration and vaccination.

“It's just getting started right now,” reports Böck.

One is also in the process of asking the volunteers who would have time for the vaccination campaign again from the end of November.

Better to book firmly than to queue for a long time

In the future, the Freising Vaccination Center will stick to the strategy of making appointments.

This has proven to be very effective, as Koch and Böck report.

In many other districts, it was possible to get vaccinated on vaccination buses without making an appointment, but this often led to long queues and angry people who wanted to be vaccinated.

“A low-threshold offer is good,” explains Böck, “but not if it does more harm than good”.

Appointments are also available over the phone

He has “never understood why people queue up for a long time at a vaccination bus instead of simply coming to us with an appointment.

The whole thing then takes a quarter of an hour.

So: If you want to be vaccinated in the district, you can book your appointment online via impfzentren.bayern.de or call the vaccination center - the more convenient way, especially for older citizens.

By the way, coming to the vaccination center without an appointment - ten to 20 citizens do it every day - is not a good idea.

If possible, however, nobody will be sent away, explains Torsten Koch.

However, the minimum interval of six months between the second and third vaccination is mandatory.

A day or not is not a catastrophe, says Koch, "but anyone who comes after five months definitely cannot be vaccinated".
