Wiesbaden - Hesse's Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) has defended himself against allegations that the state government knowingly disregarded the constitution with the Corona special fund.

"I reject that on behalf of all my colleagues in the state government," he said on Thursday in the state parliament in Wiesbaden.

The government acted to the best of its knowledge and belief.

About two weeks ago, the State Court of Justice classified the multi-billion dollar financing model to cope with the corona pandemic as unconstitutional.

"This shadow budget was the Prime Minister's shadow budget," said the SPD parliamentary group leader Nancy Faeser with a view to the twelve billion, credit-financed special assets.

It was Bouffier's decision to break the constitution, the opposition leader accused the prime minister and repeated her call for Finance Minister Michael Boddenberg (CDU) to resign.

Knowingly breach of the constitution?

Bouffier replied: "The less you are successful, the shrillier the tone and the more vile personal accusations." In overcoming the greatest crisis in the country's post-war history, it cannot be a question of small-scale politics, let alone party politics, said the head of government.

He pointed out that the State Court of Justice had declared the instrument of the special fund to be permissible, and that its specific design was unconstitutional according to the judgment.

If you are breaking new legal ground, you could be wrong, said Bouffier.

“But that is something completely different from the accusation of a deliberate breach of the constitution.” The head of government stood behind Boddenberg: He did an excellent job.

It benefits the people in the country and “of course he will continue this work”.
