Outgoing Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis announced on Thursday that he had handed over to the president the formal resignation of his populist government following the electoral failure.
Czech President Milos Zeman on Tuesday already officially tasked the leader of the center-right Ensemble, Petr Fiala, with forming the new government.
"This morning, our government presented its resignation (...) and I sent the president a letter informing him"
of this resignation.
The resignation will become effective after its acceptance by President Zeman who remains hospitalized for liver problems.
The Ensemble alliance, led by Petr Fiala's ODS, has formed a coalition with another alliance of two other formations - including the Pirate Party - and has a majority of 108 out of 200 seats in the new lower house of parliament .
The signing of a coalition agreement was formalized on Monday by Petr Fiala with a view to defining priorities and distributing ministries within the future Czech government.
The Czech Republic, a member of the EU and NATO with 10.7 million inhabitants, is currently facing a rebound in the Covid-19 epidemic as well as a sharp rise in energy prices.
