Estonia, France and Ireland have called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the migrant crisis on the border between Poland and Belarus to be held Thursday afternoon diplomats told AFP.

This meeting will be held behind closed doors, said the same sources, while the tension does not weaken between Poland and Belarus, supported by Russia and accused of "state terrorism" Wednesday by Warsaw.

"Such situations should not be used for political reasons and become a cause of tension between states," UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said Wednesday during his daily press briefing.

"The Secretary General (Antonio Guterres) is following with concern the situation on the border between Belarus and Poland", he added.

He recalls "the importance of managing migration and refugee issues in accordance with humanitarian principles and international law," said the spokesperson.

More than 2,000 migrants have been camping in freezing weather for several days in a wooded area where, for its part, Poland has deployed a fence of sharp barbed wire and no less than 15,000 soldiers to block their way.

Europeans have accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for weeks of fueling the crisis by issuing visas to migrants and bringing them to the border in revenge for European sanctions.
