Current figures from the management report of the Robert Koch Institute show how effective the vaccines against the coronavirus are.

Current figures from the management report of the Robert Koch Institute show how effective the vaccines against the coronavirus are.

Berlin - While the fourth corona wave is running, the focus is on vaccines.

Some citizens are freshly vaccinated, many will need a booster soon, and too many are still completely unvaccinated.

It is not for nothing that there is currently talk of a “wave of the unvaccinated”.

Most of the intensive care units are filled with corona patients without immunization, and the difficult course in particular is causing concern for the nursing staff.

Current figures from the Robert Koch Institute show how much vaccination can help.

In the management report of November 4, in the section on vaccination effectiveness, it is said that an estimated 145,185 probable vaccination breakthroughs have occurred since the beginning of the recording from the fifth calendar week 2021.

If you put this number in relation to the number of total vaccinations in Germany - 53,682,694 second vaccinations according to the Paul Ehrlich Institute - it becomes apparent how low the probability is of getting sick as a vaccinated person.

The rate of vaccination breakthroughs is thus around 0.003.

Coronavirus: breakthrough vaccination with clinical symptoms

However, a distinction must be made: A positive test result from a fully vaccinated person is not yet to be regarded as a vaccination breakthrough. The main difference lies in the course of the disease. The RKI defines a vaccination breakthrough as follows: "A probable vaccination breakthrough is defined as a SARS-CoV-2 infection with clinical symptoms that was diagnosed in a fully vaccinated person using PCR or pathogen isolation." This applies two weeks after the last dose, the vaccine common in Germany.

Means: A vaccination breakthrough is only rated as such if classic corona symptoms such as fever, cough, body aches, odorlessness etc. occur in the vaccinated.

The RKI also restricts the figures, as a lack of information can be assumed to be under-reporting.

"Sufficient information on the vaccination status was available for 80% of the symptomatic COVID-19 cases," the report said.

Coronavirus: 97,000 vaccination breakthroughs after Biontech vaccinations

Of the approximately 145,000 reported vaccination breakthroughs, almost 97,000 occurred after the vaccination series with Comirnaty (Biontech / Pfizer) was completed.

In second place is Johnson & Johnson's vaccine with 18,585 breakthroughs, ahead of Astrazeneca with 11,494.

There were 7,096 reported breakthroughs following vaccinations with Moderna.

Of course, it is noticeable that the number of vaccinations from Biontech / Pfizer is particularly high, but this must be put in relation. After all, the majority of citizens in Germany were given the vaccine. With over 41.8 million second doses, the vaccine is well ahead of the competition and, based on the values, has a breakthrough rate of only 0.002 percent. The vaccine from Moderna is supposedly the “safest”: With 5,177,336 second doses, a rate of 0.001 percent is calculated. Astrazeneca achieved 0.003 percent with only 3,455,596 second vaccinations. Johnson & Johnson, which only needs one dose for full vaccination protection, has 3,185,598 vaccinations distributed and the highest breakthrough rate of 0.006 percent. All vaccines show an extremely low percentage of vaccine breakthroughs.Of course, this also depends on the age of the person concerned, the living conditions and the date of the second vaccination.

The figures from the Robert Koch Institute show why it is recommended that almost all citizens of the country get vaccinated.

Infections and the transmission of the virus are not yet completely avoidable, but a look at the values and especially in the clinics shows that the severe courses can be effectively prevented.

You just have to be poked.

Under 30-year-olds, however, only with Biontech.
