The outgoing government rejected a compulsory vaccination against Corona very early on.

And she doesn't want a potential successor either.

In the population, however, the mood has turned.

Berlin - A large majority of Germans are in favor of compulsory corona vaccination, at least for certain professional groups.

In a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency, 44 percent even spoke out in favor of obliging all people in Germany to immunize against the dangerous virus.

Another 24 percent want to limit the obligation to individual professional groups such as nursing staff or hospital staff.

Only 27 percent are against compulsory vaccination in general.

The mood has changed since the start of the corona vaccinations in Germany almost a year ago.

A few days after the first vaccination on December 26th last year, 56 percent of people in a YouGov poll were against compulsory vaccination and 33 percent were in favor.

The attitude towards vaccinations for certain groups of people was not asked at the time.

Among the voters of the CDU / CSU (56 percent), SPD (54 percent) and FDP (52), the desire for mandatory vaccination for everyone is particularly strong.

With supporters of the left (46 percent), Greens (44 percent) and AfD (31 percent) as well as non-voters (32 percent), however, the idea does not find a majority.

Demands for mandatory vaccination are increasing

The current federal government of the Union and the SPD rejects compulsory vaccination.

The traffic light parties, which are currently negotiating the formation of a new government, are also against such a step.

However, demands for mandatory vaccination are increasing.

Diakonie President Ulrich Lilie recently spoke out in favor of a temporary compulsory vaccination in care facilities and in the health care system.

The President of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina also considers compulsory vaccination for certain groups to be sensible.

Such regulations already exist in other countries:

- In France, employees in hospitals and nursing homes, as well as those in contact with people at risk, must be vaccinated.

The fire brigade is also affected by the compulsory vaccination.

A total of 2.7 million people are subject to the obligation.

- According to the health authority, around 20,000 workers in health and care are affected in Greece.

According to media reports, around 6,000 of them still refuse to be vaccinated and are therefore optional.

- In Italy, the vaccination requirement for health workers has been in effect since April.

Only those who can prove that a vaccination threatens their own health can get rid of it.

- Latvia does not limit the compulsory vaccination only to the health sector.

From December 15, employees of social and educational institutions must also show a vaccination certificate.

The same applies to employees in the public sector and those who are in direct contact with customers or larger groups of people.

Employees who do not comply with the vaccination requirement can be fired by companies.

Thuringia does not want to know the vaccination status of teachers for the time being

Teachers in Thuringia do not have to reveal whether they have been immunized against the corona virus or not.

This should continue to apply for the time being, even if the federal government has legally paved the way for a query.

But opinions differ.

- In Ukraine, which is currently badly affected by the current corona wave, mandatory vaccinations are being enforced for state employees.

Several hundred teachers and police officers have therefore already been released from work without continued pay.

- In the United States, President Joe Biden has made vaccination compulsory for all federal government employees.

This also applies to companies that work for the government.

There are only a few exceptions, for example for specific health or religious reasons.

Biden has also initiated that employees of companies with more than 100 employees and certain employees in the health care system should be subject to extensive vaccination requirements.

A federal court in New Orleans suspended the implementation of the relevant order for the time being.
