There will be several weeks of “hut magic” in the old town, plus “Christmas outdoor dining” in front of five bars.

But the Weilheimer Christkindlmarkt 2021 is canceled.

The main committee of the city council decided on Wednesday - after a controversial debate.

Weilheim

- After the mandatory break in 2020, it should have taken place from December 2nd to 5th this year.

And until a few days ago things looked really good for the Weilheim Christmas market in 2021: Preparations and planning took place in the town hall for weeks.

All the more so after Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs Aiwanger "gave the municipalities a lot of courage" in letters to hold Christmas markets in mid-October, as Weilheim's location promoter Stefan Frenzl said in the main committee on Wednesday.

There should have been 22 stalls

A concept was developed on site in accordance with the specifications of the Free State: fewer stands, more distance, no common areas - that was the plan.

A total of 22 stalls, twelve fewer than usual, should have been on Marienplatz and Reinhard-Schmid-Platz (between the city museum and the city parish church).

Their operators, as usual a mixture of local clubs and commercial providers, had long been determined.

But all of them are now canceled.

Holding the Christmas market would be irresponsible, said the majority in the committee.

On the other hand, the “Hüttenzauber” will take place, where commercial operators will be offering “Christmas food and drinks” for four to five weeks in the pedestrian zone: According to Frenzl, there will be two huts on Schmiedstrasse and two on Kirchplatz.

The first two - in front of the Schmid fashion house and the Rid department store - are run by the Trollmann family.

Kurt Höller's “Intermezzo” stand can be found this year on the church square, where from November 19th Christian Botsch's “Komode Zauberbude” will be again.

More offers from restaurateurs

At the same time, five inner-city restaurants want to offer “Christmas outside gastronomy”, explained Frenzl: the “Quadriga” and the Simader travel agency on Marienplatz, the “Café Illy” in Kreuzgasse, the “Cosmea” (formerly “Blu”) café on Ledererstraße and the “ Pöltner Hof ”.

With these nine decentralized locations spread over the entire old town, “a basic Christmas atmosphere is provided” - and that is “very, very important” for all shops in the city center, as the location promoter emphasized: “For 90 percent of retailers Christmas time is the essential time, it's really about livelihoods. ”Especially since many shops have already had“ a dry spell of one and a half years ”due to the pandemic.

"An extremely gloomy picture"

While the landlords themselves have to take care of all Corona protective measures for "Hüttenzauber" and outdoor catering, the city is responsible for the Christmas market.

The majority of the committee is convinced that it cannot do that in view of current developments.

Such a market would be "irresponsible", said Hubert Schwaiger (BfW) and reported on a conversation that he had as a police officer this week with the head of the intensive care unit in Rosenheim: She had "drawn an extremely gloomy picture", especially since "on intensive care" today those who were infected three weeks ago ended up - with significantly lower incidences.

Greens consider “Boo” to be exaggerated

You have to "weigh up between health protection and social life," said Marion Lunz-Schmieder (CSU) and, like the BfW colleagues, campaigned for the Christmas market to be canceled, also to protect the clubs. Karl-Heinz Grehl (Greens), on the other hand, found that “every association and every citizen can decide for themselves” about their participation. The "boo" around the Christmas market is exaggerated, as there are "huge markets every week where hundreds of people hang out" in Weilheim. If the corona situation continues to get worse, “an order will come from Munich anyway that everything is canceled”.

Petra Arneth-Mangano (SPD) annoyed the fact that the city had the "burden" of the decision for the time being.

It also hurt, "that the clubs have to foot the bill again".

So the committee voted "with a heavy heart" to cancel the Christmas market, especially since a 2G regulation at Marienplatz is not feasible.

Only Grehl and Brigitte Gronau (Greens) voted for the market.

"Emergency brake from above"?

An “emergency brake from above” could ultimately also thwart the “hut magic”, admitted Frenzl.

But nobody wanted to imagine that yesterday.
