Who will succeed CDU leader Armin Laschet?

The first applicants throw their hats into the ring.

One of the favorites, however, is still silent.

Berlin / Wiesbaden / Gießen - The CDU * is looking for a successor to Armin Laschet *.

In view of the rather modest performance in the federal election in 2021 *, this is almost the same as looking for the new superstar in the ranks of the conservatives.

Somebody should pull the party out of the swamp.

It is still completely open who will be able to cope with this Herculean task.

So far, in any case, no one has publicly declared their candidacy for the CDU chairmanship.

But just over a week after the official start of the application process, there is now movement in the fight for the coveted position.

Laschet successor: Röttgen and Braun apply for CDU chairmanship

Today, Friday (November 12th, 2021) the first two candidates should throw their hats into the ring.

The official applications of the executive head of the Chancellery, Helge Braun from Hesse, and those of the foreign politician Norbert Röttgen from North Rhine-Westphalia are expected.

Röttgen wants to speak at 9 a.m. in the federal press conference.

According to a spokesman for the Hessian CDU, Braun is to be nominated by his home district association Gießen in the evening.

According to the information, he wants to present the reasons for the application to the presidium and board of the Hessian CDU at noon.

Laschet successor: Friedrich Merz is favored by CDU members

So two men could go into battle today.

But in surveys among CDU members, a completely different candidate is at the top.

Friedrich Merz * obviously still enjoys a lot of sympathy.

In the coming week at the latest, the former Union parliamentary group leader, who was part of Laschet's celebrated future team before the Bundestag election, should also comment on his ambitions.

He might then be something like the third man in the fight for the Laschet successor.

The application period for the CDU chairmanship runs until November 17th.

Röttgen and Merz had already applied for the CDU chairmanship in January 2021, but at that time they failed because of Armin Laschet.

Whether the CDU members will make a better choice this time is in the stars.
