If in the world, the majority of Islamist attacks primarily affect Muslim countries (90%), in Europe, France is by far the most attacked country with 49% of victims, according to Fondapol calculations.
The think tank carefully cross-checked several databases on the Islamist attacks from 1979 to May 2021. On a global scale, "with the internationalization of the Islamist cause", the year 1979 in fact marked a first turning point, while until 'then "terrorism, [...] has been mainly driven by causes that one could qualify as secular: revolutionaries, anarchists and socialists, nationalists and separatists", as reported in

With 82 Islamist attacks committed on its soil for the period, an average of two attacks per year, including 36 with only wounded or no casualties, France has at least 330 dead from Islamist terrorism.
