The nomination period for the Legislative Council ends today (12th). The "Real Estate and Construction Sector" functional constituency seats that have been automatically elected for many years have rarely seen competition. Zhao Shihao, the son of the wealthy businessman Zhao Shizeng, challenged Lung Hanbiao, secretary general of the Real Estate Developers Association.
Zhao Shihao, who participated in the election as an independent candidate, resigned from all posts including the Standing Committee of the Liberal Party and Chairman of the Youth League and resigned from the party after signing up the day before (10th), which attracted speculation.
He posted a further explanation on social networking sites today, pointing out that the election was supported by the Liberal Party in black and white, and was unanimously approved by the party’s standing committee. Zhao Shihao told "Hong Kong 01" on the day he quit the party that he understood that the industry had opinions on his Liberal Party status and hoped to see a more balanced representative who could unite all stakeholders, so he decided to quit the party.
He further explained today that a written certificate of support from the Liberal Party, that is, a signed group support consent form, was attached to the registration document and submitted to the Registration and Electoral Office.
He claimed that his nominees included members of the Liberal Party, which not only knew about it before he was elected, but also unanimously approved it.
As for the decision to withdraw from the party, he reiterated that it was entirely in response to the wishes of the majority of the industry. He hoped to unite all industries and was also grateful for the nomination and recognition from developers and builders.
Looking at Zhao Shihao's nomination information, there are obviously fewer major real estate developers nominated by voters in the industry, and many of them are representatives of construction companies.
