Reutte - The Tyrolean police discovered a total of around 12,600 crimes during controls of motorcycle and moped traffic in the past season. Reutte - The Tyrolean police discovered a total of around 12,600 crimes during controls of motorcycle and moped traffic in the past season.

The state of Tyrol announced this at the beginning of the week.

Nevertheless, the number of accidents and fatal motorcyclists has continued to decline compared to previous years.

As the press release further states, the police carried out 113 priority missions on typical motorcycle routes. The officers made a total of 5,474 complaints from motorcycle and moped drivers. In addition, there were 4136 reports from stationary radar systems and another 3000 punished offenses from the “basic traffic service” - a total of around 12,600 complaints. In addition, the decibel driving ban in Ausserfern and Imst has again been primarily checked, according to the state administration.

However, this year motorcycle traffic was again heavily affected by the measures to combat the corona pandemic. Due to the traffic restrictions at the borders, there were still relatively few motorcyclists on the road in the spring. The trend continued even after border controls were relaxed. In addition, the weather conditions with several rainy weekends were not ideal in the summer months and early autumn.

The first traffic accident in which a moped driver was killed occurred on June 15.

The most recent fatal motorcycle accident happened on September 23 on the B165 in Hainzenberg.

A total of five people who were traveling in single-track vehicles were killed in Tyrol this year.

That is one person less than last year.

In 2019, eleven motorcyclists were still dead.

“It can be assumed that the decline in these numbers is also related to the corona-related, significantly shorter motorcycle season.

Accordingly, the number of traffic accidents with single-lane vehicles and the number of offenses decreased significantly this year, ”says Bernhard Knapp, Head of the Traffic and Cable Car Law Department in the Office of the Tyrolean Provincial Government.

Less accidents

Due to Covid-19 and due to the weather conditions, the number of accidents is also generally declining in the 2021 motorcycle season. So far there have been 571 motorcycle accidents. This contrasts with the number of 686 motorcycle accidents in 2020. In 2019, 792 accidents were recorded. According to Colonel Günther Salzmann from the state traffic department of the police, the causes were diverse. These included, among other things, excessive speeds, illegal overtaking, overestimation of oneself, decreasing concentration, carelessness, or inattentive drivers.

The driving bans for motorcycles with a near-field level of more than 95 dB on several sections of the route in the Reutte district and on the road over the Hahntennjoch were unlimited this year from mid-April to mid-October despite numerous protests.

According to the state administration, the police also monitored this prohibition intensively.

The officers checked a total of 7527 motorcycles.

In 123 vehicles they found a registered near-field level of more than 95 dB.

This corresponds to a violation frequency of around 1.6 percent.

A lot of understanding

In comparison, 135 violations were registered in a total of 8917 motorcycles checked in 2020, which corresponds to an infringement frequency of 1.5 percent. In addition, the police punished another 554 other MR offenses such as speeding, prohibited overtaking, "cornering" or technical defects on the motorcycles on the affected sections of the route. As part of the traffic controls, it was found that the majority of motorcyclists were informed about the content and scope of these decibel driving bans. Most of the road users showed understanding for these traffic measures adopted to protect the population.

"The controls have also shown that the driving bans are largely observed and are also accepted by the majority of motorcyclists", so the résumé of Deputy Governor Ingrid Felipe.

"We will therefore continue this, as well as all other control activities, with the usual high intensity over the next year."
