There is a huge variety of shirt collars and every man has his preferences. If it was in England that most models were patronized at the beginning of the 20th century, there is one in particular, called an English
collar
or
tab collar,
which is distinguished by its small buttoned placket - a mother-of-pearl button or sometimes a pressure - passing under the tie. Its very pinched aesthetic is a cousin of the
pin collar,
where a golden or silver metallic rod connects the points of the collar, always passing under the tie. Points which can be square or round. The concealed fastener allows the collar to hug the silk knot, with a perfect interweaving of shapes, all in smooth curves.
The collar thus forms a small neck from which the color springs.
Aficionados appreciate it for its sharpness, its dignity, its pedigree.
Critics see in it the mark of a haughty spirit.
As for the phenomenologists reading Freud, they can detect a lot of carnal allusions in it.
