In Ecuador, there are 40,000 inmates in prison, of whom about 8,500 are in Littoral.

Ecuadorian prisons have witnessed 230 cases of killing so far this year before today's clashes, due to the wave of violence witnessed by the authorities, which the authorities attribute to groups inside prisons linked to international drug gangs.
