The Ickingen fire brigade has 51 active members, five of whom are women.

One of them is called Theresa Scheifl.

She joined the fire department at the age of 16.

Here she shares her experiences.

Icking - to be precise, it's your girlfriend's fault.

“She was already at the Ickingen fire brigade and invited me to stop by,” says Theresa Scheifl.

That was two years ago - and since then the 18-year-old has been a member of the voluntary helpers.

“'You can take a look at it first,' she said to me,” the civil servant candidate remembers September 2019. Scheifl attended a youth exercise - “at which I was immediately given a hose to eject.

I was involved right away, so to speak. "

So far, the young woman has had no contact with the fire department.

“As an outsider, you never really notice how people work here.” That was never an issue in the family either.

"My parents were first surprised when I told them that I wanted to go to the fire department."

"From the beginning I was welcomed amicably"

Scheifl started training. "Unfortunately, because of Corona, we weren't able to do that many exercises." But, according to the 18-year-old, they are important in order to achieve the necessary security and routine. Learning the first basics was not too difficult for the Ickinger - but this was also due to the comrades. “Right from the start, I was welcomed in a friendly manner and could ask my questions at any time. I felt welcome. ”Scheifl values this sense of community and the associated security of being able to rely on each other not only in the field more than highly. “That's what the fire brigade makes for me,” says the young woman.

In the meantime, the civil servant candidate has completed her first two missions. “That was in May of this year. Both a basement and a garage were flooded. ”Should the beeper call the volunteers about a serious traffic accident, Scheifl will not be in the front row. “On the one hand, I want to secure my basics even more,” she says. On the other hand, “in a case like this, we never use our young people right at the front”, as First Commander Johannes Hirt confirms. He is pleased that Theresa Scheifl has become a member of the Wehr. "We have 51 active participants, five of them are women - and I see that as an absolute enrichment."

The Ickingen fire brigade plans to set up a new youth group shortly and will organize an information evening in the tool shed.

"Everyone over the age of twelve is addressed here," says Hirt.

He already has three registrations.

“If you want to come, please contact me or our youth warden Christoph Preuss.

The entry is also not tied to the current date. "
