The Munich start-up OroraTech is causing a sensation with its technology for fighting forest fires.
Now the company has won a prestigious award.
Munich - The Munich start-up OroraTech won "The Spark - Digital Prize" from Handelsblatt and the management consultancy McKinsey on Thursday.
The NewSpace company recognizes forest fires from space and facilitates extinguishing work with precise maps.
The satellite data can prevent environmental disasters and save thousands of tons of CO2.
“The CO2 emissions from forest fires correspond to around ten to 15 percent of global emissions.
For comparison: In the case of air traffic, it is around 2.6 percent, ”said Rupert Amann, Head of Satellite Development at Ororatech.

OroraTech: Weather data from space
The start-up, founded in Munich in 2018, is fighting against climate change with weather data from space.
"We take the data from 20 satellites and visualize them on a map," said Amann.
Customers can see where the forest fires are and where they are headed by means of red circles.
Because in the huge forest areas of Canada, Australia and South America, fires can spread undisturbed for a very long time before they are noticed.
"Our customers are mainly forest companies, some of which have their own fire-fighting planes," explained Amann.
The start-up plans to launch its first satellite into space in January to make its data even more up-to-date.
