Khartoum-Sana
Thousands of Sudanese demonstrated in the capital, Khartoum, and other cities to demand the return of the civilian government and to reject the formation of the new Transitional Sovereignty Council announced by the council's head, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan two days ago.
The Sudanese News Agency stated that the demonstrations started today "in response to a call by the coordination of the resistance committees, the gathering of professionals and some political parties to demand the return of the civilian government, the release of political detainees, and the commitment to the provisions of the constitutional document."
The Khartoum state authorities had issued a decision to close all the main bridges leading to the capital, starting at midnight on Saturday.
In turn, the opposition Central Sudanese Doctors Committee announced in a statement published on its Facebook account, "5 protesters were killed and dozens were wounded as a result of the security forces' assault on them, with the exacerbation of difficulties for the injured to reach hospitals."
On the 25th of last October, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan declared a state of emergency in the country and dissolved the Sovereignty Council, which he headed, and the government headed by Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok, who was arrested for a short period before his release.
Two days ago, Al-Burhan formed a new Transitional Sovereignty Council, from which he excluded four representatives of the Forces of Freedom and Change, which includes many forces and parties, and pledged to hold free and transparent elections in the summer of 2023.
