The incident took place in the Penitenciaria del Litoral prison in the city of Guayaquil • This is the same detention facility where the severe violence incident took place at the end of September that claimed the lives of 119 people • President Guillermo Lasso declared a state of emergency and military assistance

At least 58 prisoners were killed and a dozen were injured in the night violence at Litoral Prison in Ecuador, the government said today (Saturday), in what is being characterized by authorities as fighting between criminal gangs.

The prison, located in the southern city of Guayaquil, is the same prison where 119 prisoners were killed at the end of last September in the most serious violent incident that has ever taken place in a prison in the country.

The government has pointed an accusing finger at drug trafficking gangs that control prisons and fight each other.

The latest riot was created due to the formation of a "governmental vacuum" after the leader of one of the gangs was released, according to Guais province governor Pablo Arosmana, who made the remarks at a news conference.

Videos on social media allegedly posted by detainees during the night showed them begging for help to stop the violence when shots and explosions were heard in the background.

The latest case is part of a wave of riots in prisons in the South American country, inhabiting about 39,000 detainees - incidents that occurred in February and July this year in the various prisons resulted in 101 dead people.

In an incident that took place last September, heads were decapitated, bodies were cremated and many were injured.

Meanwhile, 11 people were found hanging from Litoral in October, however authorities claimed it may have been suicides.

In September, President Guillermo Lasso declared a 60-day state of emergency in the country's prison system to enable increased funding and military assistance in taking control of the prisons.

Since the state of emergency was announced - security forces in prisons have discovered guns, grenades, knives, weapons, cell phones and drugs.
