The renovation was more than necessary, now it is almost complete: The St. Antonius Chapel in Wegscheid shines in new splendor.

This is to be celebrated with a festival service next year.

Wegscheid

- The outer facade, the walls inside, the ceiling painting, the substructure of the Marien Altar, the roof structure: the ravages of time have left their mark on the Antonius Chapel in Wegscheid and some construction sites - which have now been taken care of. In the small chapel, built in the 17th century, extensive renovation work has been taking place since spring (we reported). They are now as good as complete.

In the course of the renovation of the church building, the plaster was repaired inside and outside, the church painting work has been done.

For example, the water stain on the ceiling was completely removed.

This had not only left gray spots on the white surfaces, but also damaged a ceiling fresco.

Before that, since water damage in the 1990s, "people have only been whitewashed over it," explains church caretaker Peter Dichtl.

Ceiling painting shows Anthony of Padua

The church painter Barbara Bammer from Gmund am Tegernsee restored the large, round painting to its original state in the summer, explains Dichtl.

The ceiling fresco was created between 1720 and 1730, it shows the church patron, Saint Anthony of Padua, with sick people who ask him for help.

In addition, a woman dressed in Lenggries costume can be seen holding a plague rattle in her hand.

Such warning clappers were used in the Middle Ages and early modern times to warn others about the sick.

Painted over in 1877, the fresco was exposed again in 1910 - and has now been repaired.

The ceiling painting refers to the origin of the church, which was once built as a plague chapel.

Work was also carried out on one of the two side altars and the processional flags.

The St. Mary's altar on the left, more precisely its substructure, had sagged, but according to the architect responsible for the renovation work, it could be raised again "with little effort" because the sagging had no static causes.

"We thought it would get worse," explains Andrea Fahrner, administrative director of the Lenggries parish of St. Jakob, to which the Antonius Chapel belongs.

The company from Gaißach has restored flags

The paintings on the two processional flags were also no longer nice to look at.

These were partially peeled off, because the motifs on the fabric flags are paper prints.

“They have already been restored,” says Dichtl.

This was done by the Wiegerling workshops from Gaißach, which among other things specialize in the restoration of listed objects.

Work still needs to be done on the roof structure

After the interior is ready, a carpenter only has to lend a hand in the roof structure.

That will happen in the course of the winter, so the church caretaker.

In order to statically strengthen the wooden structure, minor damage to the roof structure will be repaired and existing beams will be reinforced.

“Depending on the weather,” says Dichtl, this will take place in January or February.

"When that's done, the entire renovation is complete."

The Antonius Chapel was last renovated in the 1970s.

At that time it was given a copper roof that “under normal circumstances will last for over 100 years”, says Dichtl.

Just not the bars underneath.

Not all of the invoices from the companies involved in the renovation have yet been received, and not all of the subsidies have been received.

In advance, the cost of the renovation work was estimated at around 160,000 euros.

In all likelihood, however, they will stay within the framework, according to the parish.

"I rather suspect that it will be cheaper," says Fahrner.

Great willingness to donate from the population

In addition to financial support from the ordinariate, the art department of the archdiocese, the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and the Lenggries municipal administration, donations of around 7,000 euros were collected from private individuals for the renovation. What Kirchenpfleger Dichtl is particularly pleased about: "The Wegscheider stand by their chapel." For example, the plumber Anton Reiser only billed the material costs, but not the 15 working hours, so donated them for the chapel. “It's no longer common, something like that,” says administration manager Fahrner.

The Antonius Chapel has been open to visitors again for around five weeks.

However, there has been no church service there since spring 2020 due to the Corona, "because the distances cannot be maintained there," explains church clerk Dichtl.

Also this year no fair could take place there, "because the scaffolding was inside".

Usually between Easter and Advent there is a Tuesday evening mass in the Antonius Chapel every 14 days.

At Easter, at the latest by the patronage in June, there should be a festive service with an organ concert for the official reopening.

"If Corona doesn't put a spanner in the works," says Dichtl.

A festival service, hopefully after Corona - somehow fitting, for a plague chapel.
