The General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) approved this Friday a resolution that declares the elections of November 7 in Nicaragua illegitimate, reiterates the request for freedom for the imprisoned opponents, and establishes a consideration on the situation in accordance with the Democratic Charter and establishes the appropriate measures.

The resolution was approved with the favorable vote of 25 ambassadors, 1 against, 7 abstentions and 1 absent.

The Nicaraguan government reiterated that the elections were held with a high level of citizen participation and requested respect for the country's sovereignty.

The Permanent Council of the OAS, through previous resolutions and several countries, had expressed concern about the conditions in which the electoral process was taking place, particularly the cancellation of the legal status of three political parties, the arrest of 39 opposition leaders , seven of them presidential candidates, accused by the government of treason or money laundering.

The Supreme Electoral Council of Nicaragua in its third provisional report, presented on Wednesday, gave the victory to the ruling Sandinista Front and its candidate Daniel Ortega with 75.82% of the votes, over the Constitutionalist Liberal Party, PLC, with the 14th, 15% of the votes.

The former candidate of the Camino Cristiano party, Guillermo Osorno, denounced on Tuesday alleged irregularities that, according to him, delegitimize the process and proposed to reissue the elections in 2022.
