Belarus wants to deploy Russian Iskander missile systems with nuclear capabilities in the south and west of the country, President Alexander Lukashenko said in an interview with a Russian security magazine published on Saturday.

Russia is a close ally of Belarus, which the EU accuses of creating an immigration crisis at its border by flying thousands of migrants and encouraging them to cross Poland illegally.

Brussels plans to impose further sanctions on Minsk in response to the "hybrid war" it is waging against it.

Lukashenko told National Defense magazine he needed the Iskander mobile ballistic missile system, which has a range of up to 500 kilometers and the ability to carry conventional or nuclear warheads.

"I need some divisions in the west and south, to stand (there)," he said.

Poland and Lithuania, members of the European Union, are located west of Belarus, and it borders Ukraine to the south.

Lukashenko did not give an indication if he had any talks with Moscow about the missile systems.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Belarus and Russia are officially part of a "union state" and have been in contact for many years to deepen their integration.

After years of reservations, Lukashenko, who has been in power for 27 years, was forced to rely more and more on Russian President Vladimir Putin following the huge protests against him after the election a year ago.

Lukashenko, who tried to broadcast business as usual yesterday while playing ice hockey, suffered a cold shoulder from Putin when the latter came out against his threat to cut off gas supplies from Russia to Europe passing through Belarus. According to the Russian president, it is possible that the ruler of Belarus said this in "anger" and warned that such a move would harm relations between Moscow and Minsk.

Putin told Russian state television he thinks Belarus is not to blame for the crisis. "Let's not forget where these crises with the immigrants came from. Is Belarus the pioneer of these problems? No, the reasons were created by Western countries and Europe themselves," Putin said. Referring to the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, Putin noted that Iraqi and Afghan Kurds are among the immigrants on the Belarusian border.

"Belarus has nothing to do with it, the fact that they came through Belarus is not surprising because Belarus has entry without the need for a visa," he said. He accused Polish forces on the border with Belarus of beating immigrants,Shooting bullets over their heads and turning on lights and sirens at night nearby.

"It does not really align with the human ideas that supposedly underlie all the policies of our Western neighbors," he said.

Putin said he hoped Belarusian President and German Chancellor Angela Merkel would discuss the crisis, as the migrants mainly want to travel to Germany and that Moscow has nothing to do with the conflict.

As the crisis worsens, the West has expressed concern about the movement of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border and a possible attack against it, while Moscow has complained about increased NATO activity in the region. Thus, the British army commander has warned that the scenario war between the West and Russia is the highest since the end of the Cold war, many diplomatic tools that sellers are no longer available.

Putin said that NATO's flying exercises in the black sea are a "serious challenge" for Moscow, and said They included large naval forces and armed strategic aircraft.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it had identified and tracked down four NATO spy planes that had flown in the Black Sea region in the past 24 hours, including a U.S. U-2S reconnaissance aircraft in Ukrainian airspace.

Despite Putin's denials, some migrants said Belarusian forces had helped them cross the border.

At least eight of them have already died and fears are growing for the safety of others due to the harsh winter conditions.

The last of them was a young Syrian, whose body was found yesterday in Polish territory near the border with Belarus.

Yesterday, the Polish army published photos that he said showed a group of about 50 immigrants accompanied by Belarusian forces crossing the border.

In addition, the Polish Border Guard said Belarusian soldiers had shot down part of the temporary border fence.

In Lithuania, Border Police officials released photos showing 70 immigrants who were said to have been brought to the country's border by Belarusian officials in trucks.
