State television quoted Azizula Kunari, the governor of Bender Abbas, as saying that a 22-year-old man died when a power pole fell on his head as a result of the earthquake. The Iran Seismological Center said earthquakes hit the island of Kashm in the Strait of Hormuz in the afternoon, about 1,000 kilometers south of Iran's capital, Tehran. He said the magnitude of the quakes was 6.4 and 6.3 and the strongest darkened at a depth of 18 kilometers.
The epicenter was reported 60 miles (60 km) southwest of Bender Abbas Port in Hormozgan Province. A USGS report said the quake had a magnitude of 6 and 6.3.
The report said President Ibrahim Raisi had instructed his senior vice president, Muhammad Muhabar, to visit Hormozgan province as soon as possible.
Raisi also urged all bodies responsible for dealing with people who suffered injuries and damage.
Assessment teams were also reported to have been deployed to analyze the situation.
Iranian social media posted pictures of damage from the quakes, including one of a wall that collapsed on a car.
Iran is located on a large fault line, and experiences one earthquake on average each day.
In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake shook the historic city of Am, killing 26,000 people.
A magnitude 7 earthquake in western Iran in 2017 killed more than 600 people and injured more than 9,000.
