Personal status law between legislation and application in a workshop

With the aim of shedding light on the amendments that occurred to the Personal Status Law and within the framework of the vocational training courses program for the year 2021, the Faculty of Law at the University of Damascus opened today a workshop entitled Personal Status Law between Legislation and Application.

The axes of the five-day training workshop include “Marriage, Divorce, Custody, Guardianship, and Awakening Contracts” under the supervision of trainers from faculty members in the Faculties of Law and Sharia, the former First Sharia Judge Mahmoud Al-Maarawi, and the Director of Endowments in Damascus Countryside, Dr. Khader Shahrour.

The Minister of Endowments, Dr. Muhammad Abdul Sattar Al-Sayed, stressed in his speech during the opening of the workshop that the aim was to clarify the amendments that occurred to the Personal Status Law, which is considered one of the most developed laws in Arab and Islamic societies and is derived from Islamic Sharia, pointing to the need for cooperation between the Ministry of Awqaf and the Colleges of Sharia and Law and Judges. And lawyers to shed light on the mentioned amendments.

Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Haitham Al-Tas, confirmed in a statement to SANA that the workshop contributes to informing the specialists and interested graduates of the faculties of law and Sharia on the amendments that took place to the law, studying them and the correct mechanisms for their implementation, indicating that the lectures include all aspects of the law and the rules in force that have not been amended, in addition to the work of lawyers in the procedures suits.

The Dean of the College of Sharia, Dr. Muhammad Hassan Awad, considered that the current law focused on the issue of women and their rights and took into account a number of matters that are in the interest of society and corrected the deficiency in the previous law, pointing out that it is the first workshop in a series of upcoming workshops aimed at highlighting the amendments to the law and its retroactive effect.

Dr. Ammar Al-Salem, coordinator of professional courses at the College of Law, highlighted the importance of choosing the Personal Status Law as a topic for the workshop, as it is closely related to society, especially with the presence of more than 70 amended articles in it.

On the eleventh of last July, the Faculty of Law at Damascus University launched a program of vocational training courses for the year 2021, with the aim of linking the university with society and the labor market.
