Survey: More than 80% of poor children take care of their families 10 hours a week, and one adult needs to help sell paper

In order to explore the situation of grassroots children’s family care, the Hong Kong Association of Community Organizations conducted a survey earlier and found that more than 80% of poor children need to do housework and take care of the family. The average time for caring for the family is 10 hours per week. Nearly half of the respondents need to help with cooking. , And nearly 10% of children need to participate in the sale of waste paper and paper.

The Social Association recommends that the government should establish a support policy for minor family carers to strengthen support.

Over-involved in housework, 20% of the interviewed children have insufficient rest and no time to do their homework

It was found that 81.6% of the children said they needed to do housework or take care of the family. The interviewed children spent an average of 10 hours caring for the family each week.

In terms of family care, actions such as vacuuming and mopping the floor (51.2%), taking care of younger siblings (31.7%), helping to buy food (27.4%), nearly half of the children need help cooking (48.2%), and some 10% of children need to participate in the sale of waste paper and paper (8.5%).

In addition, the survey also found that due to excessive participation in housework, 20% of the children surveyed have rest, mental insufficiency, and no time to do their homework, and 32.9% of the children surveyed have no money to go out for activities.
