Also more and more vaccinated people in intensive care units - what the numbers say

Even people who are fully vaccinated against corona can become ill and have to be treated in the intensive care unit.

But above all it is a group.

Munich - The number of corona deaths in Germany is currently rising sharply again.

Among them are also fully vaccinated.

In the Free State of Bavaria, for example, which has one of the highest incidences nationwide, the rate in October was a good 30 percent.

How can this be explained?

The phenomenon comes about due to several factors.

The most important:

  • The majority of Covid 19 patients in intensive care units are currently older than 50 years.

  • The vaccination protection decreases with the first vaccinated - i.e. the over-60-year-olds.

  • The number of infections in Germany is high again, the incidence even at a record level.

In the weekly management report (always on Thursdays), the RKI provides current figures for Germany.

In the most recent of November 11, the agency lists the likely vaccine breakthroughs

with

symptoms by age group.

The following numbers refer to calendar weeks 41 to 44.

Among the over-60-year-olds among Covid-19 intensive care patients, the RKI reckons that 36.0 percent of them would probably have had a breakthrough in vaccination.

In the group of 18 to 59 year olds, this proportion was only 12.9 percent.

Older people are also more seriously ill.

The highest rate of hospitalization is currently recorded among those over the age of 80, among whom the incidence is currently rising “sharply”.

DKG on the corona situation: "Vaccination breakthroughs almost exclusively in the elderly"

The RKI classified the fact that more vaccination breakthroughs were recorded early on as “to be expected”, as more and more people are generally vaccinated and the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen is spreading more and more again.

The President of the Society for Immunology, Christine Falk, said on

tagesschau24

that only 0.3 percent of those vaccinated apparently had a breakthrough vaccination.

Of the total number of breakthroughs in vaccination, only about four percent would have to go to a clinic.

And: "Vaccination breakthroughs are almost exclusively only found in the elderly." The German Hospital Association (DKG) points this out.

The cause is probably the diminishing effect of the vaccination.

The Stiko currently recommends the booster vaccination especially for people over the age of 70.

Only a minority has received it so far.

That is why the average age of intensive care patients is rising again.

According to the DKG, more than 90 percent of Covid 19 intensive care patients were unvaccinated in September 2021, compared to only 74 percent at the beginning of November.

These numbers do not reduce the importance of vaccination in the fight against the pandemic.

Experts emphasize this again and again.

"In my opinion, the decisive factor for the winter are broad booster vaccinations for people who were vaccinated more than six months ago," said Munich-based infectious agent Christoph Spinner recently.

Studies have shown that this could prevent up to 95 percent of symptomatic infections.

Corona: show incidence for vaccinated and unvaccinated people separately?

There is still disagreement as to whether the incidence should be shown separately for unvaccinated and vaccinated people.

Because this calculation is fraught with many uncertainties, reports the NDR, citing the experts questioned.

It would be questionable, for example, which vaccination status would have to be assigned to a person who would be infected with corona after the first vaccination but before the second vaccination.

The traffic light parties (SPD, Greens and FDP) are now calling for the intensive care register to be adjusted in order to obtain more precise data on how many corona intensive care patients have already been vaccinated.

The intensive care registry is operated by the RKI and the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI).

Corona easing: "A year ago the restrictions were stricter"

In an interview with “Bild TV”, statistician Prof. Christian Hesse is certain: “There is a serious difference between those who have been vaccinated and those who have not been vaccinated.

For every corona case of a vaccinated person there are ten corona cases of unvaccinated people. "And without vaccination the numbers could be much higher:" If you now hypothetically assume that nobody is still vaccinated, then you would have to reckon with incidences that are around 1000. "

Something else probably contributes to the quota of unvaccinated intensive care patients in the pandemic.

The infectiologist Prof. Dr.

Peter Kremsner told

: “I guess on the one hand it is the Delta variant that is much more infectious.

Then of course the relaxation.

A year ago the restrictions were stricter. "
