The World Organization for Animal Health announced that it had received reports of severe outbreaks of bird flu in Europe and Asia in the past few days, in an indication that the virus is spreading rapidly again.
According to reports quoted by the organization from the South Korean authorities, an outbreak of the disease was detected in a farm of about 770,000 chickens in Chungcheongbuk-do, which necessitated the culling of all the birds.
In Europe, the organization said that Norway had reported an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in the Rogaland region in about 7,000 birds.
In turn, the Belgian government has put the country on alert in the face of the growing danger of this disease and ordered that poultry be kept inside their cages from today after the identification of a highly contagious type of bird flu in a wild goose near Antwerp.
This followed similar moves in France earlier this month and in the Netherlands last October.
Outbreaks generally occur in the fall and are spread by wild migratory birds. Bird flu cannot be transmitted through eating poultry products.
Disease outbreaks also often lead to trade restrictions.
