Hello, I am Dr. Elmer Huerta and this is your dose of information about the new coronavirus, information that we hope will be useful to take care of your health and that of your family.

Today we will answer some questions that we have been asked on our Twitter account @DrHuerta.

Questions about booster doses of the covid-19 vaccine

@drhuerta I wanted to consult you I put the two doses of pfizer for the third dose as I read if I wear the same it only increases the protection 4 times, but if I get another vaccine it increases 32 times how true that is and what other vaccine would it be recommended, thanks Dr Huerta.

Hi Alfredo.

Although there are some studies that suggest booster doses of vaccines from a different platform than the one initially injected, research continues.

In the United States, regardless of those given as a starting dose, any of the three approved vaccines are allowed as a booster dose.

@drhuerta #Covid #DosisRefdamientos Dr. I gave myself the two doses of Pfizer on May / 21, I live in Argentina where there is no Pfizer for booster doses.

Which ones can I get from the ones approved by the WHO?

- FEDERICO (@republicanofed) November 12, 2021

Hi Federico, it is accepted in the United States to use Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines as a booster dose for Pfizer.

If you do not have access to these vaccines, it is possible that, in consultation with your doctor, you can use AstraZeneca's, which has been shown in European studies that it can be combined with Pfizer's.

Questions about pediatric vaccines

@drhuerta good morning Dr. My query is about the Moderna vaccine, my daughter is 12 years old and on October 25 they applied modern to her in Honduras, when I was expecting to apply pfizer, my question is the next one I should do, I am afraid to apply the 2nd dose.

- Ingrid (@ Ingrid24424441) November 13, 2021

Hello Ingrid, I am very sorry that your daughter was given a Moderna vaccination by mistake.

At this time, only Pfizer's full-dose vaccine is approved for use in children over 12 years of age.

Moderna's (also the full dose) is under evaluation by the US FDA and does not yet have its emergency use license.

I think your child should complete her second dose with the Pfizer vaccine and remember that it is possible to combine those two vaccines.

@drhuerta how safe is the Pfizer for children under 12 years of age?

Have there been any cases of serious reactions from having administered it?

Thanks

- Aimara Aviles (@AimaraAviles) November 13, 2021

Hello Aymara.

According to what the Pfizer laboratory has disclosed in its request for emergency use to the United States FDA, the vaccine is effective and safe in children from 5 to 11 years old.

The same for Moderna's vaccine, which has also applied for FDA clearance.

Thus, it is not true that serious side effects caused by the Pfizer vaccine have been detected in children under 12 years of age.

@drhuerta is there any risk in the Covid 19 vaccine for an 8-year-old child with a diagnosis of Neurofibromatosis?

- Jen (@ Jen27242301) November 9, 2021

Hi Jen, just as - I'm sure - you vaccinated your child against polio, measles and other diseases, there will be no problem when you vaccinate him against covid-19.

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic condition that can affect the brain and peripheral nerves of children, but is not a contraindication to vaccinating them.

Other questions about vaccines

@drhuerta My mother had Coronavirus for not getting vaccinated 3 months ago and it was serious.

He suffers from thrombophlebitis and that was his fear of the vaccine.

Now you want to be vaccinated, in my country only Moderna, Sputnik and Aztrazeneca are available, which will be more recommended, your doctor says that anyone.

- Elizabeth Morales Cordón (@emoralescordon) November 14, 2021

Hi Elizabeth, I'm so sorry for what happened to your mom.

I agree with your mother's doctor because, although Moderna's vaccine has shown high efficacy, any of them will give her protection against a serious illness and the danger of dying.

@drhuerta hello doctor my niece was vaccinated with spuntik yesterday with what other vaccine can she combine her second dose to allow her to enter the usa in December?

- Freckles (@lindacasas) November 12, 2021

Hi Freckles.

According to an Argentine study, not yet published, the Sputnik V vaccine can be combined with the AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines, both accepted by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

@drhuerta greetings from Colombia.

What is known about the efficacy of the available vaccines against the delta variant?

Thank you.

- Ricardo Gutierrez (@ RicardoGutier31) November 11, 2021

Hi Ricardo.

Studies have shown that all vaccines in use have lost efficacy against the risk of developing a symptomatic infection caused by the delta variant.

Fortunately, vaccines have not lost their effectiveness against serious disease and the danger of death, so it is highly important to get immunized.

Lastly, there are no specially designed vaccines against the delta variant.

Can you eat egg before the sinovac vaccine?

- Jota (@josejotali) November 10, 2021

Hi, Jota.

There is no problem in eating eggs before vaccination against covid-19.

If you ask this question, it is because you have heard that some people should be careful when getting vaccinated and see if they are allergic to egg whites.

I tell you that this happens with some flu vaccines, which are made from chicken eggs.

Covid-19 vaccines are not made using chicken eggs.

General questions about covid-19

Dr. Can a person vaccinated against covid donate blood?

If the answer is "yes", from when you can donate and if the answer is no, I would like to know why.

Thank you. @ Drhuerta

- Isa (@BebecitaRosado) November 13, 2021

Excellent question, Isa.

Sure, donating blood from people who have been vaccinated against covid-19 is possible, and doing so is encouraged.

The person immunized with any of the authorized vaccines can donate blood at any time, as long as they do not present symptoms and feel well at the time of donation.

Donors who received a live attenuated covid-19 vaccine (which is still experimental), or who do not know what type of vaccine they received, must wait two weeks before donating blood.

https://t.co/UhBM1Sw0OT @drhuerta a question, is there any medical reason why showers are not yet allowed in gyms?

- sandra (@CazaMortifagos) November 13, 2021

Hello Sandra.

The truth is that, if the frequency of infection in the geographic area is less than 10 per 100,000 inhabitants, and the majority of the population is fully vaccinated, there is no reason why gym showers should be closed.

Obviously, even though we don't like them, we must obey local ordinances.

@drhuerta hello good night.

When I can cut my hair.

I have already 17 days of having contracted the covid.

I already feel completely fine.

But I want to know if there are any complications from cutting my hair?

- Jose V Reyes Garcia (@josevreyesg) November 12, 2021

Hello Jose.

While it is true that it has been observed that a person who passes the infection can have temporary hair loss, there is no reason why you should not cut it.

Thanks for your question.
